IMPALAFEST '98
ImpalaFest 98 was held in September 1998 at the Arlington Truck Assembly plant in Arlington Texas. It was sponsored by the local Impala SS club, HOSS (Home Of the Super Sport) This was the assembly plant where the Impala SS cars were originally assembled from 1994 to December 1996. In December of 1996 GM closed production on all rear wheel drive cars. The plant was converted to the more profitable GM truck production
ImpalaFest was a weekend filled with fun and a full schedule of Impala SS activities. Many members arrived on Thursday afternoon and spent the evening washing car and meeting with old friends. Caravans of Impala SS arrived all afternoon. Many traveled over a thousand miles to attend the three-day extravaganza. Friday was a full day of technical seminars on variety of Impala related subjects. There were several clinics show the different types of performance and appearance modifications available f or the Impala. Of course the NAISSO Impala Super Store was on hand to sell a variety of Impala accessories. Activities lasted late into the evening as ..
Saturday morning it was off to the Arlington Assembly Plant for the big car show. Several caravans of about 30 cars each left the hotel for the short drive to the assembly plant. It was a chance for car owners to show their cars. Many of the Impala SS are used strictly for shows and pleasure and not driven on a daily basis. There were a variety of unique cars on display. Many owners have spent many hours modifying and upgrading (known as mods) their cars. There were a variety of displays showing modifications including, high performance engines, custom wheels and suspensions, custom paint (see PurPala) and interiors to name a few. Just about any available modification could be found represented on an Impala SS at the show.
Impalas were grouped by show class. There were well over 200 cars on display. While the judges spent the morning judging the Impalas (a very difficult job!), owners toured the GM plant. Later in the afternoon there was an awards ceremony and trophies were awarded to the winners of each show class. After the awards ceremony it was back to the hotel for some rest and relaxation.
Sunday morning it was off to the races. It was a chance for the Impala SS to show off their performance mods. Several of the "high performance" cars were running the quarter in the 12-second range. Please visit the "QUARTER TIMES" page for more informationDurwood Keller
