My first "official trip" to The quarter mile track was at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis Texas. This was held in conjunction with ImpalaFest '98, Arlington Reunion 3. The Impala Group had exclusive use of the track that day, therefore each car was able to conduct several runs down the track. There were many first timers out that day to test their cars. We drove to the track on a Sunday from Arlington, Texas, about a half-hour drive. I was not able to perform any preparations prior to making my runs in the track. My very first time was a disappointing 15.7-sec. [Run #1] Now bear in mind that the following conditions existed. It was a hot, dry day. Temperatures were in the upper 90's. I was one of the first to arrive and made my first run about 15 minutes after arriving. The engine was still hot from the drive in and I had about 1/3 tank of gas (93 octane). I still have the original plugs in the car at 27K miles. On the first few runs I left the gearshift in [D] and let the car shift on its own to see what the car would run on its own. [Run#2] Again, I was still in the 15.7 Second range. After a few runs I tried shifting manually by holding back and moving the selector before reaching the redline mark. This resulted in an about a .2 second improvement in the ET with a time of 15.5 seconds [Run #4]. To date I have not done any modifications to the transmission, although I do plan to install a shift kit to tighten up the shifts which should be good for another .2 to .3 second improvement in the future. As the day went on and I became a little more accustom to judging the lights on the tree and was able to improve my launch off the line. On this day, I was not able to develop any consistency in my reaction times. I only caught one red light the whole day, but my reaction times varied from .561 to .975 (oh yes, .457 for the red!) During the trial runs I made about 6 runs and my best time was 15.468 [Run #6]. Now came time to dial-in for the elimination runs. This is where years experience pay off. After the trial runs the car had a chance to sit and cool off for several hours before elimination runs. I knew that it would run a little faster after sitting for a while so I dialed in at 15.50 just a little higher my best time at 15.468. Well I broke out in a big way coming in with an ET of 15.327. [Run #7] I reduced my dial in to 15.3 for the second run (losers bracket). I underestimated the car and actually ran my fastest time of the day with a 15.318. Of course I broke out again and my opponent in that race also broke out, but I was just a bit faster, so he got the win [Run #8] I hope to do a few more modifications in the future to get my ET times down a little. I would like to get the car in the upper 14-second range. But more important is I plan to practice some more on my technique to improve my reaction time and develop some consistency in my runs. Check back in the future for more information about future runs on the track. By: Durwood Keller (click for E-MAIL) |
